What is the action of a spring-loaded-to-open hinge?  First, a hinge should have one or more knuckles removed and replaced with a torsion spring to make it a spring type hinge. The best way to describe it is by following which way the spring legs push the leaves.  A leg of the spring will lay on each hinge leaf and exerts force on it.  In this case, the springs will push the leaves apart, or the open position of the hinge. This is important to keep in mind when mounting the hinge to the door and frame so you can envision how it will push or pull the door.
