This shearing type is used for a few different reasons:
- The end knuckles need to be the same size for cosmetic reasons.
- The end knuckles are on the same hinge half and the deformation will be used to retain the pin. You cannot have a hinge with partial end knuckles on opposite leaves as this will cause the hinge to bind.
The balanced shearing operation entails at least two shearing cuts, and in some instances three so it will always end up being more expensive than a standard unbalanced shearing operation.
