Hasp and Staple Fit: What to Check Before Ordering

Hasps and staples provide a straightforward way to help secure a lid, door, hatch, cabinet, or cover. Choosing the right configuration comes down to a few practical details, including material, length, mounting, and alignment.

How Hasps and Staples Work

The hasp has a moving arm with a slot that closes over the fixed staple. Once the staple loop passes through the slot, a padlock, wire, or cable tie can be added to help prevent the arm from being raised.

Hasps and staples are generally used for light- to medium-duty security where the goal is to deter tampering or unwanted opening. The Guden Hasps and Staples Deep Dive provides a closer look at how the components work together.

If an application does not require a separate locking device, another type of industrial catch or latch may be a better fit.

Select the Material

Guden offers hasps and staples in three material options:

  • Type 304 stainless steel provides strength and corrosion resistance for outdoor or corrosive environments.
  • Cold rolled plain steel provides strength at a lower cost.
  • Aluminum with a stainless steel pin provides corrosion resistance for applications that do not require the strength of stainless steel.

Guden’s broader marine hardware selection includes stainless steel hasps, catches, handles, hinges, and gas springs for applications where corrosion resistance is an important consideration.

Check Length and Alignment

Guden hasp arms are available in lengths ranging from 1.88 inches to 6.00 inches. Custom lengths and sizes are available upon request.

Before ordering, confirm:
  • The distance between the hasp and staple mounting locations
  • Whether the staple loop will pass cleanly through the slot
  • The clearance needed to raise and lower the hasp arm
  • Whether the padlock, wire, or cable tie will fit the staple loop
A hasp that is too short may not reach the staple. One that is too long may create alignment or clearance problems.

Review the Mounting Requirements

Hasps and staples are available with or without mounting holes. Custom drilling is also available when the application requires a specific hole pattern.

Review the available mounting space, attachment method, fastener requirements, and position of both components. The hasp arm should close smoothly over the staple without interference.

Hasps and staples are sold separately, so you can order only the component the application requires. This is useful when a thru-hole or another attachment point is already built into the product.

Confirm the Details Before Ordering

Material, dimensions, mounting, alignment, and the required level of security should all be confirmed before selecting a part.

Guden provides available 2D drawings in PDF format and 3D CAD models to help verify dimensions and fit. In-stock parts are available for same-day shipment.
